Following the recent resignation of passed Finance Minister Kemi Adeosun, Zainab Ahmed was appointed the Nigerian New Finance Minister by President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday September 14th 2018.

The new development came when President in a tweet thanked the minister for her services to the nation while wishing her well in future pursuit.

President Muhammadu Buhari directed the Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, Mrs Zainab Ahmed, to oversee the Ministry of Finance with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, according to Vanguard, Adeosun bowed out after an allegation by the online newspaper, Premium Times, that she presented a fake NYSC exemption certificate as part of the requirements for clearance as a minister by the Senate.

Until today, Adeosun kept quiet until she was faced with a report that concurred with the publication and declared the certificate fake.

“I have, today, become privy to the findings of the investigation into the allegation made in an online medium that the Certificate of Exemption from National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) that I had presented was not genuine. This has come as a shock to me and I believe that in line with this administration’s focus on integrity, I must do the honourable thing and resign”, she wrote in her letter to President Buhari.

“Your Excellency, kindly permit me to outline some of the background to this matter. I was born and raised in the United Kingdom, indeed my parental family home remains in London. My visits to Nigeria up until the age of thirty-four (34) were holidays, with visas obtained in my UK passport.

I obtained my first Nigerian passport at the age of thirty-four (34) and when I relocated there was debate as to whether NYSC Law applied to me.  Upon enquiry as to my status relating to NYSC, I was informed that due to my residency history and having exceeded the age of thirty (30), I was exempted from the requirement to serve. By full name Mrs Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed was born 55 years ago in Kaduna State. She obtained a Bachelors Degree in Accounting from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1981 and an MBA from the Ogun state University, Ago Iwoye.

Zainab Shamsuna started work in 1982 as an Accountant in Kaduna State Ministry of Finance in Kaduna state and moved to Nigerian Telecommunication Ltd (NITEL). In 1995, where she worked in various departments and rose to the rank of the Deputy General Manager (DGM).

While in 2010, she was appointed to serve as the executive secretary of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative.

She was appointed Managing Director of Kaduna Investment Company. She was then appointed a member of the National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG).

Mrs Zainab Ahmed is a fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN), a member of the Nigerian Institute of Taxation and the Nigerian Institute of Management. Before becoming a Finance Minister she was the Minister of State Budget and National Planning.
