Is Henry Cavill through with playing Superman? That’s what The Hollywood Reporter claimed, while Warner Bros. issued a not-quite-definitive statement indicating it hasn’t made any decisions regarding an upcoming Superman movie. Cavill responded by sharing a cryptic Instagram video in which he displays a Superman action figure while wearing a T-shirt embossed with “Krypton Lifting Team”.
All of this has left fans confused about the cinematic fate of the Man of Steel. But if Cavill is indeed done with the role, fans on social media have started pushing forward a (not entirely) new choice for the role: Nicolas Cage.
Fans’ reasoning: Not only is Cage a massive Superman aficionado (he owns a mint edition of the first-ever Superman comic and even named his son Kal-El (Superman’s birth name on his home planet of Krypton).
And then there’s the fact that Cage almost was Superman in the Tim Burton-directed “Superman Lives”, which had long been in the works until the whole thing was ultimately scrapped 20 years ago. The never-made film, however, has gained a near-epic status over the years after test footage of Cage in costume emerged in a documentary “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened”.
Taking all these factors into consideration, a campaign to promote Cage for the role has been gathering steam on Twitter in tweets such as these:
During the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, Cage briefly discussed the Superman movie he never got to make. “I would offer that the movie that Tim and I would have made, in your imagination, is more powerful than any of the Superman movies,” Cage said.
“I didn’t even have to make the movie and we all know what that movie would have been in your imagination,” he continued. “That is the Superman. That is the movie. Even though you never saw it — it is the Superman.”
