The Senator representing Abia North senatorial district, Orji Uzor Kalu, has made his first appearance at the Senate following his recent release from prison.

Kalu, a former governor of Abia State, had been sentenced to 12 years in prison for alleged N7.65 billion fraud by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had prosecuted Kalu for allegedly using his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, to siphon money from the coffers of the Abia State Government during his 8-year term as governor.

But the Supreme Court on May 8 voided Kalu’s conviction on the grounds that the trial was wrongly conducted and ordered his release from prison pending a retrial of the case.

The EFCC is expected to commence a fresh trial of the former governor and current Senator representing Abia North senatorial district.
