According to report, Ferguson played a part in hiring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the return of his former assistant Mike Phelan after Jose Mourinho was sacked last week.

It is also understood that former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel wants to join the club as the director of football.

United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who is determined to get things right after three managerial failures on his watch, turned to the former Red Devils boss as he geared up to sack Mourinho following their 3-1 loss at Liverpool.

Along with Sir Bobby Charlton and David Gill who make up United’s football board, the legendary manager had rarely, if ever, been asked for advice or assistance by Woodward.

“I have this energy, I have education but I’ve not seen anything that’s really interesting to make the big change and then I see this big idea about director of football at Man United.
