John David Washington Talks Football Career, ‘BlacKkKlansman’ And His Love For Beyonce On ‘Ellen

John David Washington stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” on Monday, where he reminisced about his pro football career, explained how he landed his role in “BlacKkKlansman” and gushed about his love for Beyonce.

The 34-year-old actor talked about playing for the St. Louis Rams — or at least keeping the bench warm for the players who did make it on the field. “I was on the bench the entire time, I didn’t actually get to play,” he confessed, adding he was later cut from the team. A subsequent injury led him to change career paths and pursue acting.

As the son of actors Denzel Washington and Pauletta Washington, John David grew up with a passion for acting, but chose football because he wanted his own “sense of identity.” However, he explained that he “had this passion inside, I wanted to act, and I’ve come out now.”

Washington has received rave reviews for his performance in Spike Lee’s “BlacKkKlansman” and he told DeGeneres the story of how he landed the role. As he explained, one day he received a call from Lee out of the blue, who told told him he had to read the book on which the movie is based. Once Washington had finished reading it, Lee told him, “I’ll see you this summer.”

Later in the show, Washington opened up about being a huge fan of Beyonce, lamenting that despite his connections he wasn’t able to get tickets to her concert. Luckily, DeGeneres had a surprise gift in store. Watch:
