ECOWAS Named President Buhari Champion Of Coronavirus Response
ECOWAS has named President Buhari as the champion to coordinate the Coronavirus (COVID-19) response in West Africa.
President Muhammadu Buhari has been appointed as the champion to coordinate the Coronavirus (COVID-19) response in West Africa by the leaders of the Economic Community of West Africa (ECOWAS).
Buhari’s senior media adviser, Femi Adesina, announced the appointment in a tweet on Thursday.
Adesina said the ECOWAS leaders reached the decision at an extraordinary summit held via a video conference on Thursday.
Other presidents from West Africa would be working with Buhari to curb the spread of the virus in the sub-region.
Finance ministers and governors of central banks from the region had held a virtual meeting on Monday on the COVID-19 situation in the region.
Meanwhile, so far, West Africa has over 5,000 confirmed cases of Coronavirus.
Nigeria, as of Wednesday, had recorded a total of 873 confirmed cases of the virus with 197 recoveries and 28 deaths.
