Ogun State Police Command says it has arrested an ex- convict, Yisa Nwachukwu, in Ota, in the Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area for allegedly stealing a MAN diesel truck belonging to one Alhaji Owonifaari.
The alleged buyer of the stolen truck, one Yusuf Sanusi, was equally arrested.
The police in the state said the suspects were arrested following information received by the Divisional Police Officer of the Onipanu division, Sangobiyi Johnson.
He was said to have been told that the truck was brought to Ojolowo Sawmill, Ota, where it was being dismantled in order to sell it in parts.
On receiving the information, Johnson reportedly led detectives to the scene where Nwachukwu, who had earlier been convicted for stealing a Bajaj motorcycle, was arrested along with the receiver of the truck, Yusuf Sanusi.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said Nwachukwu admitted that he was employed as a driver by the owner of the truck and when he was not paid his salary, he decided to abscond with the truck.
Oyeyemi said the suspect told policemen that he was on his way to Nsukka in Enugu State when the truck developed fault and since he had no money to fix it, he called the receiver (Yusuf Sanusi) who bought the truck for N400,000.
Oyeyemi said, “At the mill, another stolen bus with number plate, FKJ 932 XS, belonging to one Kingsley Unaka, was recovered.”
He said the state Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, had advised members of the public to always carry out a background check on whoever they wanted to employ, so as not to have a thief as a member of staff.
