The Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, on Sunday said he would support the International Table Tennis Federation tournament in 2019 to make it bigger.
Ambode said this after the finals of the tournament, tagged, ‘ITTF Nigeria Open 2018,’ at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.
He said his administration would give financial support to attract more people and encourage more Nigerians to participate.
He said, “This is a major improvement from last year’s competition; and again for the very first time in the last six years, we found a Nigerian winning the men’s singles. This brings a lot of excitement for me because I love table tennis. Next year’s tournament will be more exciting than this.”
Nigeria’s Aruna Quadri emerged victorious after defeating his opponent from France, Harchard Antoine, to win $5,000.
The Nigerian also won another $200 in the fair play award. Also, the best Nigerian home-grown player of the tournament, Jamiu Anyawale, was rewarded with $200.
