Residents of Calabar, Calabar South, the Cross River State capital went to bed in fear after series of gun shots and killings in the late hours of Saturday, May 11.
Three persons were killed after fight broke out between two cult group. “Klans and Axe clashes started in Uyo, Akwa Ibom where many students died in the cause of this clashes, Akwa Ibom were able to stop it from going too far. But, in Cross River we fear that more lives will be wasted in the cause of this fight” Eyewitness said.
The clash of Saturday in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State started at about 8pm where three were killed by rival cult groups at different locations.
It all started at Mayne Avenue By Ekpo Abasi where a guy suspected to be a cultist was shot dead by a rival cult group, after the attack Police quickly came into action and recovered the corpse from the road side.
The second attack was recorded at Abasi Edem Street, a Street in Calabar South where one was also shot dead.
Also, Last Born, the owner, of a popular Bar, Urban Bar situated at Mount Zion Street close to Atamunu was reportedly gun down in his office by suspected cultists.
Further report reveal that the death of last Born extended the pandemonium to Abasi Edem Street, where another person was shot to death.
Some residents of the affected areas have attributed the renewed clash to last month’s fracas that claimed one victim, known as ‘Change.’ The clash was believed to be a retaliation of the death of ‘Change.’
The State Security Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade, Mr Ani Esin while speaking to newsmen on Sunday said: “At the resumption of the clash, the security agencies mobilised themselves, swung into action and restored peace in the area”.
At the time of this report there are calm in the city, but residents says that this has distracted their night movements.
