Although I always had an ease with reading and writing, when I started writing again, about 4 years after finishing college, it was not easy.

My first texts embarrass me and I simply made countless mistakes. This was because he ignored grammatical rules, had stopped reading frequently, did not study much and neglected revision.

Over time, I received constructive criticism from people close to me. I must confess that, mainly, with tips, I evolved – and a lot – my writing.

Today I understand the importance of looking for something on Google when I’m not sure, proofreading a text at least 3 times and reading a lot.

And, as I realize that the difficulty in improving writing is not exclusive to me, I decided to share with you my main tips for writing better articles.

1 – Stimulate your creativity

One of the first steps when writing articles is to understand the importance of creativity in their writing.
Even if you write technical articles, it is essential to understand that creativity plays a fundamental role in how you approach the central theme of your text and, for this reason, it is essential to improve your writing. Stimulating your creativity can help you expand your view on the subject you are going to talk about or, simply, to think of a more attractive approach to your text.

2 – Understand the basic grammar rules

There is nothing more discouraging than reading a text full of grammatical errors. In addition to being terrible for the eyes, an article full of errors demonstrates carelessness or lack of professionalism, which leads us to think that the interlocutor has no credibility – and nobody wants this, is it?.
Therefore, you must understand the basics of the grammatical rules of the language in which you are writing.
So, if you have doubts about a phrase or word, search Google if it is spelled correctly. If, still, the doubt persists write in another way. In this case, it is better to simplify than to end up getting complicated.

3 – Read a lot – but, read like a critic

Reading is extremely important. Scientific researches point out that reading not only promotes the improvement of your knowledge and writing but also helps in the development of the brain.
But, as a writer, you must read texts as well as a critic. No, you don’t have to give your opinion on every article you read.

What I mean is that if you like a text, a book or simply a publication on a social network, read it again. Do this so you can read critically. That is, to analyze the reason why that text caught your attention.
Observe the approach, the grammar, the structure of the text. Analyze every detail, use them as inspiration and understand how interesting these aspects can be for you and your writing.

4 – Study

Writing is always evolving – and so are our skills. It is natural for practice to make us better writers. However, studying is also essential and, without a doubt, accelerates the development of our writing.
It is important not only to study grammar rules and writing itself but to understand its entire universe.
How to develop your voice in writing? How to create more interesting and attractive articles? How to use SEO techniques to make your articles reach more people? And, more importantly, how do you make your message coherent and consistent?

There are numerous online courses on the subject, some of them on platforms such as Course. However, my favorite moment is on Nonfiction Writing and Creative Writing, which covers everything from methods and routines to writing better articles to publishing the text. I already attended some classes and learned a lot.

5 – Have a plan

Before starting to write an article, interestingly, you have a kind of plan so that it does not become a meaningless ramble.
What do I mean by that? Well, it’s interesting that your article has a beginning, middle and end and that you know where you want to go. Establish how your conclusion will be and how you will organize your ideas to reach it.
Determine a kind of basic structure for your article, list the main points to be addressed in the article as if they were checkpoints. So, while writing and developing your ideas you just need to worry about connecting the dots and getting to the end.

6 – Search

The importance of research is sometimes overlooked. It is important to note: do not write anything based on “guessing” or what someone said one day, without first checking the facts.

When you write an article with a theoretical foundation – especially if it involves data and statistics – it becomes much richer and more substantial.

Therefore, be it a technical or personal article, try to do some kind of research. Doing this can help you find data to support your arguments or simply help you form a more solid opinion on a particular topic.

7 – Practice

Practice leads to evolution, that is a fact. Leave laziness aside and write, a lot. As much as you find everything you write horrible, don’t stop. Up ahead you will see how much it has evolved.
Without a doubt, it is impossible to evolve your writing without practicing and trying to develop this skill.
Of course, studying and reading is very important, but nobody evolves in writing without writing.

8 – Do not roll – the simpler the better

One thing is for sure, you need to know your audience when writing a text directed to them. What I mean is that it is important to understand that if your audience is not composed exclusively of doctors and PHDs, for example, there is no point in using a far-fetched or completely technical vocabulary.
At the time of writing it is essential to simplify and make yourself understood. This is because, in our country, research shows that among the literate, about 65% of individuals have some type of difficulty in reading and interpreting texts.

Therefore, using too many words, not being objective and practical or simply going too far to say what you mean can make the message unclear enough or simply not reach the reader as it should.
Therefore, eliminate unnecessary words or phrases, replace words that are not suitable for your audience and simplify your writing.

9 – Use your personal experience, share your opinion and use your voice

This is one of the main tips I give when someone asks me about how to differentiate myself in so much content, apparently the same.

We all have a story to tell. We all have unique views about the same situation. Our perceptions change from individual to individual. Our opinion is different and the way of communicating is also unique – precisely because of all our complexity as human beings.

Therefore, allow yourself to make use of your experiences and learnings to support your texts and arguments, share your opinions and ideas and use your voice to communicate.

For example, there is no point in trying to create a completely technical and complex text if you love simplicity and practicality. It is useless to be completely formal if you and your audience are simpler.
Therefore, communicate in the way you feel most comfortable, this is how the most authentic articles are born.

10 – Review as many times as necessary

According to my own experience and the conversations I have had with other writers, this is the most overlooked part of all.

Many of us put so much effort into writing and end up destroying all of that effort by publishing a text without proper revision.

As I said in tip number 2, it is essential to understand basic grammar rules to avoid mistakes. Often, however, errors caused by lack of attention, for example, go unnoticed – despite understanding grammatical rules. Therefore, review as many times as necessary.
I don’t have an ideal number to give you, but I usually review my texts 3 to 5 times. This is because the first time I end up revising the form of writing and the fluidity of the text much more than the grammar. I do this again looking for repetitions and making a few more adjustments. Only after that, I leave for the grammar review.
Then I make the necessary grammatical corrections and, whenever I find an error, I revise the entire text again. Of course, this does not exempt my articles from imperfections, but it certainly makes them much better than they were before.

11 – Publish your texts and be open to criticism

Letting your texts see the light of day is just as important as writing them. You are not obliged to do this, nor do you need to publish everything you write. However, publishing them will give you more confidence and bring you closer to valuable opinions and feedback.

No, don’t listen to unfounded criticism from people who are simply not your audience or have never taken the “risk” of exposing yourself and doing what you are doing.

Listen to feedback from people who care about you and who can help you improve your work. This is the type of criticism that matters.

And what do you do with negative criticism and haters? Learn to be patient, be stronger and more courageous and not to care – so much – with the opinion of who is not important to you.
